• Second registration phase for chemicals in Europe successfully completed
• No time to stop with REACH implementation

Mannheim, June 3, 2013 – Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH has successfully completed the second registration phase for chemicals in Europe. All substances with production and import volumes of between 100 and 1,000 metric tons per year had to be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki by May 31, 2013. Rhein Chemie has thus reached a further milestone in the implementation of the extremely complex REACH European chemicals regulation.

Dr. Marco Lenck, REACH Project Manager at Rhein Chemie, said: “The workload and time pressure for Rhein Chemie during the second REACH registration phase were immense. We had to set up a new project organization with seven employees specifically for this process. Over the last three years, these employees have worked on 21 sub-projects to ensure the successful registration of around 200 Rhein Chemie products. This process makes a key contribution to safeguarding the future of more than half of our business.”

According to Germany’s Chemical Industry Association (VCI), German companies have once again led the way in the joint submission of substance data. So far, almost every fourth registration dossier has been submitted by a company in Germany. This shows how seriously companies here take their responsibilities. Since the process of REACH implementation started, over 32,000 registrations for almost 6,500 different substances have been submitted to the ECHA from across Europe. More than 8,000 of these registrations for over 3,500 substances have so far come from Germany.

And there is no time to stop as far as the REACH policy is concerned. Rhein Chemie has already started work on the third phase of registration and will register specialty chemicals and cost-sensitive substances with annual production and import volumes of between 1 and 100 metric tons with the ECHA by May 31, 2018. Dr. Lenck said: “The challenges facing Rhein Chemie in this REACH phase too are particularly tough, because the registration costs for chemicals produced in small quantities are relatively high in relation to their sales. In the years leading up to 2018, we will focus once more on submitting the registrations required for over 100 chemicals in this phase so as to secure jobs in the Mannheim region in the long term.”
