Chardon, OH – Rhein Chemie Corporation, a subsidiary of LANXESS Corporation, announced today that it has opened its Engineering Plastics Applications Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pa. As the only Rhein Chemie lab facility for plastics in the United States, this applications laboratory will support customers in the Americas region through product and application testing. Housed in the Technology Center at the LANXESS Corporation’s U.S. headquarters building in Findlay Township, the lab will work closely with Rhein Chemie’s global research laboratory in Mannheim, Germany, and help identify innovative opportunities for the company’s high-quality products.
“With a focus on engineered thermoplastics, this lab is well positioned to support the business and technology development efforts in this region,” explained Don Stengel, Rhein Chemie Corporation’s Applications Development Manager.

Rhein Chemie has proven expertise in hydrolysis stabilization and physical property enhancements through its range of innovative plastic additives. As environmental concerns increase and technology improves to enhance the performance of sustainable plastic resins, the company has been focused on supplying new additives and extensions of its proven petrochemical-based technology to address the demanding needs of sustainable bio-plastic and bio-polyols (soy-based) resins. For example, STABAXOL® carbodiimide has proven stabilization results in controlling hydrolysis degradation in traditional nylon, polyester, TPU, and polyurethanes. The new Plastics Applications Laboratory will expand on the success of this additive technology and help place Rhein Chemie on the technology forefront of innovative approaches to bio-plastics.

The company has also begun exploring opportunities for its high-quality products in the recycled nylon market, which is growing exponentially in the United States. The STABAXOL additive technology is used during the process of recycling nylon carpet fibers back into “engineering grade” nylon.

Based on recent successes in improving the properties in engineering PET, Rhein Chemie has begun to evaluate the efficacy of its STABAXOL additive technology in PET recycling. Early indications are positive, and applications testing and improvements can more readily be conducted in the new laboratory.

“We’re very excited to have the lab operational so that our plastics experts can further develop these and other innovative solutions to meet the latest industry challenges,” explained Rhein Chemie Corporation President Edward Klavin. “And we’re confident that our customers will find significant benefit in the top-notch support we can provide regionally from our new Applications Laboratory.”
