Mannheim – The application technology in the Polyurethane/Plastics Division of Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH, Mannheim, is currently focusing heavily on the field of adhesives. Carbodiimides are already well-known as highly efficient hydrolysis stabilizers for plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), thermoplastic polyester polyurethane (TPU) and polyurethane (PU) elastomers.
The use of several carbodiimides from the Stabaxol® product range as hydrolysis stabilizers in adhesives results in a considerable increased performance. The service life of the adhesive based on standard polyester polyols is significantly extended.
The adhesive is not resistant to extreme temperature and humidity conditions. Without hydrolysis protection the tensile strength of the adhesive decreases rapidly. Adding Stabaxol® the tensile strength can be kept on the initial level up to three times longer in comparison with the unprotected material. A long-term protection of the material against hydrolysis is possible. The processing of the adhesive is not influenced by using Stabaxol®.
The extended service life and the enhanced material quality by using carbodiimides offer a decisive competitive edge for the user. This opens up chances to new applications in higher quality market segments.
The wide range of mature, high-quality products within the Stabaxol® group is continuously extended by optimizing existing products and developing of new customized products. Rhein Chemie’s further efforts will be continued in meeting the requirements of the coating, adhesive and sealant industry concerning hydrolysis protection.
